History

Since the 1970s, when locals started retrofitting old Schwinn paperboy bikes with multiple gears, Crested Butte has helped write mountain biking history. The bikes may have changed… but the experience hasn’t. RIDING IS CRESTED BUTTE, and the wheels are in motion for the world’s oldest mountain biking festival, the 29th Annual Fat Tire Bike Week on June 24-28,2009.

Those interested in the story of mountain biking can see it all year long at the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, located in the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum in downtown Crested Butte. Classic bikes, photos, mementos and media clips tell the lively story of this home-grown sport and the characters who gave it life.

On June 26th, the Chainless Race after party featured Stretch Johnson and Children Of The Horn. They are a line-up of Crested Butte musicians who have come together to bring the people some good-ole booty-shakin’, deep-pocket, horn-driven Funk!

CBMA

If you have ridden the trails in Crested Butte, or heard about them, you may know that most of the trails around here have been slowly transformed into bike trails by the sheer number of people who ride them and maintain them. We are also very fortunate to have a very active local non profit organization, the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association (CBMBA), which is affiliated with the national organization IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association). CBMBA has been passionately involved in trail maintenance, trail protection, access, and land holder trust. Most of the small trail signs you’ll see along the way are compliments of CBMBA and the local forest service. As a FTBW participant you can elect to provide a donation to CBMBA, and thank them for all the hard work they do to keep our trails ready for you!

CBMBA’s website .
